Maze began with a geometric composition by Hungarian painter Ákos Matzon, whose work also draws on architectural thinking. Developed in the context of the TANDEM exhibition, the project started with a question: could the visual rules behind a static composition be reconstructed as a generative process?
I used recursive subdivision to turn the square grid into a continuously changing structure. As the lines move and the composition is repeatedly divided, the image takes on the appearance of an evolving labyrinth. The animation is built from a limited set of operations; repetition and variation make the underlying process visible over the course of the loop.
Maze is a 20-second loop shortlisted for the LOOP² Open Call. An early version was shown alongside Matzon’s work at the TANDEM exhibition. Another version was included in the live visuals for Daveform Quintet at Müpa Budapest, accompanying a jazz performance with Kurt Rosenwinkel.
