Ex/Position, 2026

A 20-second generative loop exploring how still images become perceived movement.

EX/POSITION was created for this year’s LOOP² Video Art Festival at f|x|r Gallery in Veszprém, whose theme, Afterimage, explored how images persist, transform and repeat after the original moment has disappeared.

The work reflects on the early photographic motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge and Étienne-Jules Marey, as well as the logic of the zoetrope and other early optical devices. It looks back to the moment when sequences of still images began to construct the illusion of movement, marking a transition between photography and the emerging language of moving images.

A walking figure circles a cubic space. As the scene turns, its separate poses begin to read as continuous movement. The figure multiplies, leaving a trail of frames behind it; each copy varies in position and in the phase of its walk cycle. I calculated these positions and phases in Blender Geometry Nodes, aligning the figures into a seamless 20-second loop.

Presented in an immersive 360° space, EX/POSITION explores this relationship through repetition, rhythm, light and perception. Tape-recorded sound effects add an analogue texture to the digital animation.

The work received third prize in the LOOP² 2026 competition. The festival presented the submitted works at its opening, and the selected works remain on view at f|x|r Gallery, House of Arts Veszprém, through 24 January 2027.
